THE FIVE-AND-A-HALF MINUTE CORRIDOR
you are in a corridor. the corridor should be short. the door behind you is 3 meters away. the door ahead of you is 4 meters away. the total length of the corridor is 7 meters.
this is a lie.
the corridor is longer than its measurements. ¹
¹ navidson measured the hallway three times. each measurement was different. the first time: 7 meters. the second time: 7.2 meters. the third time: the tape measure ran out. ¹ᵃ

¹ᵃ⁻ⁱ this footnote is deeper than the corridor. you are now inside a footnote inside a footnote inside a footnote. the architecture of annotation has exceeded the architecture of the building. the commentary is larger than the thing it describes. this is not unusual. most religions work this way.
you keep walking.
the walls are the same green-gray tile as the hallway upstairs. but they are closer together here. not because the corridor is narrow. the corridor is the same width. the walls have simply decided to be closer.
there is writing on the left wall. ²

²ᵃ E.D. is either eric dawsby or every dreamer. the house does not distinguish between proper nouns and archetypes. in the house, names are measurements too, and measurements are unreliable.
there is writing on the right wall.

the corridor bends. ³
³ the original floor plans do not show a bend. the architect — if there was an architect — designed a straight hallway. the corridor bent itself. or the corridor was always bent and the floor plans were drawn by someone who had never been inside. ³ᵃ
³ᵃ zampanò's manuscript contains seventeen pages describing this bend. eleven of them are blank. four are written in a language that does not exist. two contain only the word "turn" repeated until the ink ran out. the fox has read all seventeen pages. the fox bent the corridor further. ³ᵃ⁻ⁱ
³ᵃ⁻ⁱ you are now three footnotes deep inside a description of a bend inside a corridor inside a house inside a website inside a browser inside a computer inside a room that is, we must assume, smaller than the corridor. the recursive depth of this annotation exceeds the structural depth of the building. the map is bigger than the territory. the commentary has eaten the text. you are not reading about the corridor anymore. you are in the corridor. the footnotes are the corridor. every inch you read is an inch you walk. every word is a tile underfoot. this sentence is approximately 1.2 meters long.
after the bend, the corridor changes.
the tiles are no longer green-gray. they are the color of a screen at 3am when the content has ended but the browser is still open. the color of waiting. the color of a cursor blinking in an empty field.
the fluorescent lights are replaced by something else. not darkness. not light. the visual equivalent of a held breath.
you hear something ahead. not a sound. the shape of where a sound would be if the corridor allowed sound. a negative-space hum. the acoustic shadow of a frequency the house has swallowed.
you are further from the entrance than the building is wide. this is the part that navidson could not explain. this is the part that broke the measuring tape. this is the part that the fox built the website to contain. not to display — to contain. this page is a cell. the corridor is the prisoner. you are visiting hours.

the corridor measures five and a half minutes by scrolling. the page says it should be seven meters. seven meters takes four seconds to walk. the document is wrong by a factor of eighty-two. the document does not care. the document has never cared about accuracy. the document cares about how long you stayed.
